Program: Ezekial Polk, Pioneer Family of Douglas and Campbell Counties, by Elaine Steere.  This family includes the 11th President of the United States, James K. Polk, the youngest man elected as President (at the time).  An ardent believer in "Manifest Destiny," he increased the territorial limits of the United States by a third during his term, primarily due to the annexation of Texas and large territories in the Southwest and along the Pacific coast, which in turn led to the establishment of the Department of the Interior.  The northern border of the United States was also established under Polk, as were the Naval Academy and the Smithsonian Institution.
The Society newsletter re-publishes the article Sheriffs of Douglas County, originally published in the Douglas Neighbor on July 6th, 1994 and authored by Joe Baggett.

14th - Lucille Hilton Redding of Winston, Georgia, the first elected female Sheriff in the state, passes away at the age of 97.  NOTE: Thirty-two years prior, Lula Duggan Camp had been appointed to complete her husbands term, but was never elected in her own right.
